In addition to an increased risk of infection on the tongue as a result of someone having a tongue piercing, I have seen many instances of chipped and broken teeth from biting on a barbell or from a metal ball banging against the front teeth. I have also seen instances of gum recession and bone resorption from the constant trauma. This damage is usually irreversible and may result in tooth loss.

Top Dentist in Pike Creek | Doctor Canker sores can be very annoying to your tongue and even painful. There are several steps that you can take to alleviate the discomfort of aphthous ulcers (canker sores).

What to Avoid

First, avoid direct sunlight and foods containing nuts, raisins, jello, chocolate, whole grains, and wheat germ during the duration of the ulcer, as these foods actually feed the virus! It may help to eat fish, chicken, pork, and lean beef, as well as drinking milk. In addition, take vitamin B, zinc, vitamin D, and selenium.

As a preventative therapy, take 500mg of lysine daily at the first sign of "tingling," which some patients feel in the prodromal stage. (If you are taking medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist to avoid interactions). A homeopathic remedy called calendula tincture placed topically on the ulcer (DO NOT SWALLOW) also seems to help some patients' ulcers to heal more quickly.

Further Questions? Call Our Office Today!

For resistant cases, there is an effective anti-viral prescription medication called acyclovir, which must be taken five times daily for seven days. Lastly, most of my patients experience instant relief with a prescription that is topically applied in the office called laurel sulfate. Hopefully, these remedies will help you to control your canker sores, instead of your canker sores controlling you!
