Bedroom Dentistry - No More Snoring - Eliminate Sleep Apnea

Is your sleep (and that of your partner) interrupted by snoring? If so, you are not alone.  According to the New England Journal of Medicine, more than 90 million Americans snore.  This annoying nighttime affliction often indicates a struggle for breath and can result in high blood pressure, which can damage the walls of the carotid arteries and increase the risk of stroke. Continue reading for more information about options to reduce or even stop snoring completely with Drs. Justison and Gladnick.

What Causes Snoring?

What causes snoring?  When you are in a typical state of sleep, your muscles and soft tissues in your throat and mouth relax, which shrinks your airway.  The velocity of your airflow then increases as you breath, causing the soft issues in the soft palate and uvula to vibrate resulting in the familiar "noisy breathing" or snoring. Some people resort to surgery to remove the tissues that adversely affect  respiration, but the success rate is a mere 20-40 percent.

Stop Snoring With Silent Nite

A much better alternative is a dentist-prescribed snore prevention device called Silent Nite sl.  This is a custom fabricated dental device that moves the lower jaw forward, increasing the the space in your airway tube.  The fit is contoured to your mouth and is comfortable.  It permits  small movements of the jaw and allows uninhibited oral breathing.  You deserve a good night's sleep.

Sleep Disorders | Wilmington DE

Most people consider sleep disorders a medical problem, and indeed medical doctors usually make the diagnoses.  However, dentists can alert patients and their physicians to the potential presence of a sleep disorder based on observations made during routine oral exams.  Your dentist will look for heavy bruxism, enamel erosion due to reflux, and difficulty keeping an airway opened when reclining in the dental chair,  among other symptoms.  Your dentist can make a lifesaving referral to a sleep physician who may prescribe a CPAP device for keeping the airways open during ...
