A Checklist for Proper Flossing

Top Dentist Wilmington DE | Proper Flossing

Most of us know the recommendation from our dentist about flossing at least once each day. The truth is, however, that few people are heeding this advice. There are some estimates that as few as 30 percent of Americans floss every day—and as many as 32 percent say they never floss, according to an article in US News & World Report.

The reasons for flossing are simple: Your toothbrush simply cannot reach in between teeth to get rid of any food particles that might be stuck there. Flossing also aids in removing plaque that has started to build up between teeth and under the gum line. The bottom line is that flossing is important in the prevention of gum disease.

Let’s take a look at what your Wilmington, DE dentist recommends as far as how to floss your teeth properly.

Do You Know How to Floss Properly?

Given the statistics on how few people are actually flossing regularly, chances are you might not know how to do it properly. And you’ll maximize the benefit you receive from flossing if you are sure to do it properly. There is a certain technique involved. Here’s a checklist:

  • The ideal amount of floss to use is about 18 inches, winding it around each of your middle fingers. You’ll need to keep 1 or 2 inches of floss available; this is what you’ll slide in between your teeth.
  • Holding the floss taut, slide it up and down gently between your teeth. Be sure to move the floss around the base of your teeth so you are hitting below the gum line.
  • Use a clean section of floss when you move to the next tooth.

What Kind of Dental Floss Is Best?

The best floss is one you’ll use regularly, so it’s really a matter of personal preference. There are numerous flosses available—waxed and unwaxed, flavored and unflavored. Use the kind you like and you’ll be more apt to use it regularly.
