Preventing dental emergencies is a collaborative effort between you and our dental team. The goal is to ensure you achieve and maintain optimal oral health and enjoy a pain-free smile.

Of course, there are all kinds of dental emergencies, but let’s explore the most common and how you can prevent them.

Common Dental Emergencies in Wilmington, DE

#1 Toothache

Toothaches are the most common dental emergencies; the most likely culprit is a deep tooth infection. We rely on root canal therapy for deep tooth infections to get rid of the pain and prevent tooth loss.

#2 Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth can happen to anyone. Fortunately, with timely intervention, your dentist may be able to save it. If you knock out your tooth, store it in a cup of milk or saliva to keep it viable until you see the dentist.

#3 Broken Tooth or Restoration

Sometimes, you bite into something hard and chip or break a tooth or restoration. Minor chips may not be dental emergencies, but if you have a break in the tooth or restoration, we should see you as soon as possible to prevent infection.

#4 Oral Injury

Oral injuries can mean many things—from an object stuck between teeth to a softball to the smile. If you’ve had an oral injury, please get in touch with our compassionate dental team as soon as possible.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

To help prevent deep tooth infections requiring root canal therapy, see your dentist regularly and brush and floss at least twice daily.

Knocked-out teeth and broken restorations may result from oral injuries. Wear a mouthguard when playing softball and other sports to lower your risks.
