What Causes Bad Breath?

Having bad breath can come from many conditions. Most commonly, it is caused by lack of oral care and a condition known as periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is an active infection in your gum tissue. Healthy gums are essential to a healthy smile and good breath.

Other causes of bad breath include:

  • Certain medications
  • Eating disorders
  • Digestive issues
  • Dry mouth

Mints, gum, and mouthwash only mask the odor of bad breath temporarily and do not address the root of the problem. We can treat bad breath at its cause and help you achieve fresh breath, all in a shorter amount of time than you might think.

Treatment for Periodontal Disease

If we catch gum disease early enough, we can often reverse it with a few advanced dental cleanings, improved home care, and using the right products. As periodontal disease progresses, we cannot reverse it completely, but can control it by cleanings away all of the diseased tissue and bacteria in your gums in order to promote healing.

We can usually make excellent progress in just a few dental appointments. Keeping gum disease under control, however, will require diligence on your part. You will need to brush and floss properly, using proper techniques, and use any products recommended by Dr. Gladnick and our hygiene team in order to promote healing.
