Dental implants are a popular option for complete tooth replacement, and with good reason! Implants are extremely durable and they last much longer than some of the other tooth replacement options available today. If you lose a tooth due to an injury, or to extensive tooth decay, the best way to find out if you're a candidate for a dental implant is to visit your dentist for a consultation!

The Dental Implant Process

Once you've visited your dentist to go over your treatment options, and decided that dental implants are the right choice for you, the process begins. This treatment is typically completed in stages.

First, your dentist will remove your existing tooth, or prep the area if needed. Once ready, you'll be able to have the surgery needed to place a titanium post into your jawbone to replace the root of your natural tooth. Titanium is typically the metal of choice for dental implants because it can actually bond together with your jawbone, making it completely sturdy, permanent, and natural feeling. The post is typically tapered for the best fit in your mouth.

After the implant surgery, the next step is to wait for the implant area to completely heal. In order to finish the procedure, your implant needs to fuse with your jawbone and become stable. It can take up to 6 months to completely heal, and your dentist will give you specific instructions for the healing process to ensure that your implant is healthy, and ready for a crown to be placed.

The final step of this treatment is to have your crown placed. Your crown will be cemented into place, attached to the implant post, which provides that strong end result, and allows you to function as if you still had your natural tooth! In fact, because your dentist will match the crown to the color of your teeth as well, most patients can't even see the difference between the implant and their natural teeth.
